Doesn't Sugar Give Us Energy?



Technically we do get energy from sugar. But too much sugar is not a good thing. In fact, high blood sugar can have the opposite effect and actually make you feel tired.
So getting the right amount of the right kind of sugar is important. You probably didn't know there are different kinds of sugar. Sugar is so important to our bodies that scientists have actually created some technical terms to talk about it. For example, if you have a high level of sugar in your blood it is called hyperglycemia.
So if you hear someone say they are hyperglycemic that just means they have trouble with sugar when it gets into their body. So how does this sugar get into their bodies? Through food, drinks, candy, fruits, and other things you may not realize.

Not all Food is Healthy
It is so important to control how much sugar we get that scientists use what they call a glycemic index for food to tell how much sugar a food has. This index works well for natural foods like fruits and vegetables but it doesn't help us with things like soft drinks, candy, or pastries. Even knowing the glycemic index is only half the solutions.

You may have heard the word carbohydrates but did you know that means sugar?
There are two kinds of carbohydrates one kind is called simple carbohydrates the other is called complex carbohydrates. But carbohydrates is just another word for sugar. Why did they give them these names?
Because they wanted a way to tell if the sugar will get into your body quickly or slowly. Simple sugars get absorbed quickly while complex sugar is absorbed slowly over a longer period of time.

Quick sugars give you a burst of energy and slow sugars give you energy all day. There are some basic rules if you don't have a glycemic index handy. White foods are usually high in sugar. Foods high in fiber are usually low in sugar. Foods high in protein are low in sugar.

So what's The Problem?
The problem is that our body tries to control the level of sugar in our blood with a chemical called insulin. It is made in the pancreas. If we over work the pancreas it will malfunction giving us the wrong level of insulin and allowing the wrong amount of sugar to get into our blood. Too much sugar in your blood can damage all the organs in your body. If we have extra sugar in our body it gets stored as fat. That fat is meant to be extra energy if we need it in the future. Unfortunately most of us never need that extra energy.

So we just keep storing it. That is why exercise helps reduce fat because we use that extra energy when we exercise. But all the exercise in the world won't help if you bring in more sugar then you can burn. Even if we reduce artificially sweetened foods and drinks we still get sugars from certain foods. That is why a healthy diet is also important. But how do we know if we have high blood sugar? Well, you get very thirsty, you feel tired, you feel weak, you start to pee a lot, your vision can go blurry, and you find yourself getting a lot of infections.
